New short film soundtrack album for the short film Eternal Elegy in Velvet released on all major streaming platforms. Shot on 16mm film, the short is a beautiful and personal portrait of grief, loss, and friendship. Directed by Michelle Martinez.

For the soundtrack, I wanted to record all live players in order to match the film's beautiful and organic analog film aesthetic. Computer samples in soundtrack music dates itself (in an unpleasing way) after a few years, but live recordings retain life forever.

The short film Opulent Round Edible Object won a Vimeo Staff Pick. Scored by yours truly. Directed by Evan Mann.

Live vocals and instrumentation add so much.

On this cue near the end of the Low Midnight soundtrack, I had the extreme pleasure of working with vocalist @sage_bond007.

Not only are the melody lines beautiful, but the black metal screams accompaniment bring multiple elements of the story together in an epic but shattering conclusion.

Sometimes, a theme grows with the character.

Simpler times?
Probably for me. RIP cousin.

Sad Isn’t Always Somber

Most custom music layers deeper than simple toddler emotions of sad, happy, angry, etc.

And using those words to describe the emotions a character feels in a given scene just wouldn’t cut it. Usually directors will tell a story or give an analog for the way a character is feeling.

In this cue for the opening scene to the award-winning short film Eternal Elegy in Velvet by @michelleadrianamartinez_ , our lead Leah isn’t just sad but is battling something much deeper. This is the music she listens to as she doesn’t leave the bed.

Without any context, you may not associate this music with sadness, but in this context, we learn so much about what she is feeling right now.

I would love to hear your interpretation of what that might be.

Commercials Tell Stories, Too

Good ads often have a need for custom music when they have a crafted story.

It’s easy to use stock music (or soon-to-be AI music) because most ads are short and you just need something to fill that background space.

But when you still want to be a storyteller in the commercial space, custom will get you there.

This is an ad I wrote music for last fall for Lumenati Productions. It’s a different kind of piece that was needed to contrast cold and warm feelings.

It’s hard to put into words how it felt to compose the music for this short film by @michelleadrianamartinez_ .

It’s beautifully shot on 16mm film, and in my opinion required all 100% real, live instruments for the score.
